Water retention could affect a person in two ways; local Edema or general Edema. The local affects specific parts of the body whereas the general Edema is spread throughout the entire body. Fluid retention causes bloated bellies, stiffness in some body parts, swollen ankles, feet and hands etc. Whatever be the type, they have similar causes which is captured this writing.
WHAT CAUSES WATER RETENTION?
1. KIDNEY ISSUES:
Kidney problems and diseases can affect the body’s ability to get rid of excess water/fluid and sodium. The kidney’s function of separating unwanted/excess fluid can be hindered if affected by sicknesses and this is one of the water retention causes.
2. TOO MUCH SUGAR AND SALT:
Too much sugar in the body causes a rise in insulin levels which hinders the excretion of sodium from the body leading to water retention. Excessive salt intake also causes the body to retain more water which causes Edema.
3. MENSTRUAL ISSUES:
The associated problem is termed as Premenstrual Syndrome Edema. As commonly known, there are a lot of hormonal changes that occur prior to menstruation and this could lead to water retention as well.
It is very obvious during pregnancy that aside the general increase in the normal body mass, some women have swollen feet and hands. This is also one of many water retention causes. Some women may remain fateven after pregnancy.
5. INCORRECT BODY POSTURE OR POSITIONING:
You could get water retained n your body if you assume certain postures for too long a time. For example, people find water retained in their ankles after sitting or standing for a long time.
6. IMPROPER DIETS:
Water retention is caused by excess sodium in the body. Eating less of potassium foods such as carrots and oranges could worsen the problem. Deficiencies in meals such as insufficient protein or vitamin B1, B5 and B6, as well as inadequate magnesium and calciumare also causes of water retention.
Burns are also another of the causes of water retention. Burns from fire and even the sun leads to the skin retaining fluids and causing swellings.
8. PILLS AND DRUGS:
Certain medicines are among the fluid retention causes. Especially, drugs that are meant to harness high blood pressure are among causes of water retention. Any other anti-inflammatory drug could also be a cause.
9. INACTIVE ACTIVITIES
Inactivity and laziness are among the causes of water retention. The body also gets rid of excess water through sweating. A good number of people who do not engage in active exercising and activities that make them sweat are likely to be affected by Edema.
10. INSUFFICIENT WATER INTAKE:
Taking in more water helps wash the various glands and tissues which makes it easier for fluids to pass through them. Inadequate water intake hinders that process. It is among the major fluid retention causes.
