are sinus infections contagious

Most often than not, we tend to shy away from people that have been infected. Some say; “the last time I had an infection was when my buddy or sibling got infected”. This has led many to ask the big question; “are sinus infections contagious?”

CONTAGIOUS AND NON-CONTAGIOUS SINUSITIS

The type of causative organism is what will make sinus infection contagious or not. Also the immunity of the people around will determine whether they will be affected or not. Primarily, the two organisms that cause sinusitis are bacteria and viruses.

1. VIRUS INDUCED SINUSITIS

Contagious sinus infections are those ones that are caused by viruses. One of the basic biological characteristics of viruses is that, viruses are easily transmitted from persons to persons. Therefore, the viruses that are stuck in the sinus can be transferred into the air as the victim breathes, sneezes or coughs or discharges mucus. These escaped viruses can then be caught into the nostrils of any other person.

2. IMMUNE SYSTEM STRENGTH

The next factor to determine whether or not a sinusitis may be contracted is the immune system strength of the surrounding people. Though a person may contract the virus from another person, the ability of the immune system to fight off the virus will prevent them from being infected. This is why one person contracts sinusitis in a house, some other members may get affected as well but not everyone will. Therefore immunity may make sinus infection contagious or not.

3. BACTERIA INDUCED SINUSITIS

Unlike viruses, bacteria cannot be carried in the air for long. For this reason, bacterial causes do not make sinus infection contagious. In much simpler terms, sinusitis caused by factors like dust or allergies are not contagious.

Now, when asked “are sinus infections contagious?” you know the facts to support your claims.

Since you may not know which sinusitis is contagious or not, you may want to eat healthy and nutritional foods to boost the strength of your immune system to fight off infections as well as distance yourself from infected people.
