What is an eating disorders? Eating disorders is a mental condition which results in abnormal eating behavior, it is a form of eating characterized by eating compulsively.

You may be considered as having eating disorder if you have any compulsive attitude toward food such as eating too much within a short time frame or tend to eat less due to your mental perceptions of what a perfect body should be.

What are eating disorder types? Anorexia nervosa, pica, restrictive food intake disorder and Bulimia nervosa each with different signs and symptoms.

Cultural and peer pressure influences adolescents to have a certain body type, such mental status makes them develop compulsive uncontrollable appetite for food.

Anorexia nervosa is characterized by fear of getting too fat or gaining weight thus the notion that too much food may cause extra weight and fat while bulimia nervosa is characterized by binge eating where sufferers eat uncontrollably.

Eating disorders in children may cause them to grow too thin or too fat such that they develop other medical conditions such as become obese at tender age.

Signs of eating disorder includes fatigue, irregular menstrual period in women, oral inflammation, gastric reflux etc.

Another instance of eating disorders is pica, a condition characterized by eating and regurgitating non-food items.

Avoidant or restrictive food intake disorder which is characterized by lack of interest in foods. This is a common eating disorder in children.

Eating disorder statistics reveals that about 1.6% and 0.8% of women and men in a given year are affected in developed countries, also anorexia and bulimia affects about 0.4% and 1.3% respectively for young women in developed countries. Signs of an eating disorder includes drastic loss of weight, frail and weak appearance, enamel erosions and oral inflammation.

Anorexia and bulimia is about ten (10) times more common in women than men.

Considering treatment profile and statistics, according to a Wikipedia source, after 5years of treatment, 70% and 50% of anorexia and bulimia sufferers respectively do recover completely.

Symptoms of eating disorders

There are several eating disorder symptoms depending on the mental condition that predisposed an individual to eating abnormally. Do i have an eating disorder? Here are few examples of the eating disorder symptoms:

1. Irregular menstrual period

This occurs in women who are highly averse to food as it is in anorexia nervosa patients. This may lead to norovulation and infertility.

2. Purging

This may be causes by using laxatives or purgatories to empty the colon of undigested foods. This may further lead to more eating and it is very common in bulimic patients.

3. Muscle weakness

This is common anorexic patients which may be accompanies by fatigue and joint pain due to low energy levels and loss of essential nutrients such as calcium and potassium level irregularities .

4. Depression and anxiety

Both of them are eating disorder symptoms very common to both anorexia and bulimia nervosa.

5. Scurvy

This is common in children, caused by insufficient vitamins and minerals the bones needed to form properly. Inadequate calcium levels may cause bone curvatures and malformation in children.

6. Weak erection

Weak erection and poor libido is very common in men and as such may be caused by eating disorders.

7. Sensitivity to cold

This may be caused by burning of fat under the adipose tissues which causes exposure and sensitivity to cold. This is commonly found inanorexia nervosa sufferers.
