Heart burn refers to an uncomfortable peppery sensation which is usually felt in the middle of the chest or beneath the breastbone. This is the result of the stomach acid getting access into the oesophagus through the oesophageal sphincter which causes an irritation in the oesophagus. It is normal for this to happen occasionally. However, if it becomes persistent and regular, you must find a way to solve it. For instance, if it keeps happening every time you lie down or bend over towards the ground, it is an indication that your oesophageal sphincter is malfunctioning.

Saliva is known to neutralise stomach acid. Finding a way to swallow more saliva is an option to get rid of heartburn. It is certainly going to be frustrating to be deliberately salivating and swallowing. The best way to salivate and swallow to neutralise stomach acid is by chewing a gum. Chewing gums make the salivary glands secrete more saliva automatically which you swallow to neutralise the gastric acid to prevent the burn or give you a relief.

Just as some people buy antacid drugs for heartburn treatment, banana is a natural antacid and a perfect option for getting rid of heartburn. Potassium, which is found in bananas, is an alkaline with a high pH of 14. Due to this, the intake of banana results in the introduction of very high alkalinity which is very effective for the neutralisation of the stomach acids.
NOTE: Some people have complained that eating bananas worsened the heartburn. The green ripe bananas often contain potassium nitrate which is known to worsen heartburns. Importantly, you need to eat very ripe bananas or even over ripe, spotty bananas which have no nitrates.

Baking Soda or Sodium bicarbonate is an effective heartburn relief as it can neutralise the acidity in your stomach. As long as it has a pH number that is greater than 7, it will be perfect for this purpose.

Ginger is a buffer for acid. In addition, it is a great option for those who have nausea accompanied heartburns. The ginger allows the stomach to settle down which reliefs you of nausea as well as neutralising the strength or effect of acid.
HOW: Wash a piece or pieces of ginger, peel and slice into pieces, and boil in a bowl of water for about 15 minutes. Now separate the water from the slices of ginger with the aid of a colander and drink the water.

There are lifestyle activities and behaviors that are associated with this. Even you don’t know how to get rid of heartburn will require you altering these behaviors.
- Drink a lot of water to aid in digestion and to dilute the concentration of gastric acids.
- Avoid sleeping immediately after meals. You should sit around or do some other activity while you wait for about 2 hours or more before going to bed.
- You should eat in smaller bits since intake of huge bites of food pressurises the oesophageal sphincter which can cause it to malfunction.
- Do physical exercises to lose some fat, specifically, belly fat. These fats interfere in the sphincter’s normal functioning. Avoid fatty foods as well since they create excess fat.
- Smoking and alcoholism also affects the oesophageal sphincter. Quit these practices to get rid of this problem.
- Avoid wearing tight clothing. Tights shorts, trousers etc put pressure on the abdomen which also causes heartburns.
