Shoulder blade pain can be very terrible sometimes especially when you have an outing, you don’t wanna allow someone to tap you right there, and crying might the closest alternative. Shoulder blade pain won’t allow you to carry your arms as you want.

Shoulder blade pain causes

Here are some of the things that may cause pain between shoulder blades:

1. Tendinitis

Tendons are thick cords that holds the bones to the muscles, when they are irritated or inflammed, you might experience acute pain in shoulder blade as a result coupled with tenderness and inability to move the shoulder.

2. Fibromyalgia

This is a chronic disorder in the upper limb musculature characterized by unintended pain at tender points in the joints which may include the head, neck and the hips. So also it may extend to the shoulder blade thus causing pain in shoulder blade.

3. Subarachnoid bleeding (SAH)

This is bleeding within the subarachnoid space. This may create extra pressure on the surrounding tissues, nerves may be compressed which may give rise to numbness and pain shoulder blade pain.

4. Arthritis

There is a special form of arthritis called Ankylosing spondylitis (severe inflammation of the vertebrae) it primarily affects the spine and as such may produce chronic pain between shoulder blades. Another instance of arthritis that may cause pain in shoulder blade is osteoarthritis a condition characterized by the wearing of the cartilage that cushions bones from stress and tears. This may occur in any part of the body, the shoulder blade inclusive.

5. Frozen shoulder

This is a condition that characterized by restrictions to the range of shoulder motion.

6. Nerve pinching

This may be caused by poor posture which puts pressure on the arm. Some of the symptoms of nerve pinching is numbness and pin/needle sensation in the arm.

7. Bursitis

Bursitis is an inflammation of the bursae fluid-filled sacs found about joints. They are commonly found in areas where tendons, skin and muscles meet bones. They add lubrication which reduces friction but in instances where they are inflammed especially around the shoulder blade region, they can cause serious pain due to heightened friction and less lubrication.

8. Hodgkin lymphoma, bone cancer, esophageal cancer

All these cancer types can cause pain in the shoulder blades. The severity of these malignant cancers will determine the extent of pain and how long it last in each episode.

9. Gastric esophageal reflux disease (GERDs), gastritis and peptic ulcer

All these conditions are highly related and thus may cause shoulder blade to ache seriously. This pain might often present as a sign of complication.

10. Scoliosis

A medical problem often genetic in nature, characterized by the bending of one shoulder thus altering the balance of the body. This may cause persistent pain in the shoulder area as more pressure is exerted on the lowered shoulder.
