Vaginal bleeding or spotting may be evaluated depending on the severity of the bleeding, which of the menstrual phases it happened and how soon after your last menstrual period it started. Spotting refers to vaginal bleeding noticeable in droplet form depending on the underlying causal factor.
Spotting should be considered normal if your menstrual cycle is steady and regular, however if you experience irregular periods that changes between duration from 28days to 32days and vice versa, do see your doctor for proper medical evaluation.
Spotting after period may be caused by a lot of factors ranging from hormonal changes, uterine changes, to degeneration and shedding of tissues and cells. Every woman has 28-32 days to complete a menstrual cycle which includes the follicle stimulating phase, ovulation phase, luteal phase and menstrual phase.
The following are some of the reasons why you may be spotting after periods:
Have you ever had a miscarriage within the last couple of months, the uterine tissues that grew while the fetus was developing might still be there, this may make light bleeding to persist after your period.

Birth control pills, estrogen supplements and intrauterine devices can make to spot after periods. Intrauterine devices irritates the uterine lining when not fit properly, majority of those who uses IUDs has reported incidences of bleeding after period.
3. Ectopic pregnancy
Ectopic pregnancy is the fertilization and implantation of fetus in organs other than the uterine wall, this may be accompanied by extreme pain and spotting after period. Ectopic pregnancy is not to be joked with as it may lead to terrible consequences. Heavy bleeding after period should be a source of concern as it might point to ectopic pregnancy.
4. Uterine fibroid
Fibroid is the growth of fibrous tissues within the uterine wall (which competes with the developing fetus for space in pregnant women for space) as well cause occasional bleeding after period. The extent of growth of the fibrous tissues will determine the severity of spotting.
5. Uterine cyst
Uterine cyst may also cause bleeding after period.
6. The following medical conditions may cause spotting after period
- Thyroid issues
- Ovarian cancer
If you have ever aborted a fetus or you had reasons based on clinical evaluation why it is necessary, you may experience spotting after your menstrual period for some time.
8. Hormonal imbalance
Hormonal imbalance such as in progesterone, and estrogen may cause slight vaginal bleeding which comes out in form of unfertilized eggs and dead red blood cells, this may regarded as spotting.
9. Coitus after menstrual period
Having sex immediately or soon after your periods may also trigger spotting, especially if you had deep penetration during sex.
Infections such as candida thrush, bacterial vaginosis (BV) may also cause vaginal bleeding immediately after your period.
This is however a ‘wonderful’ cause of spotting, it usually does not call for any concern except if spotting is heavy coupled with severe and persistent bleeding.
